X-59 QUESST

"QueSST is NASA's mission to demonstrate how the X-59 [built by Lockheed Martin] can fly supersonic without generating loud sonic booms and then survey what people hear when it flies overhead" (link).  A goal is to supply regulators with public opinion data that might enable supersonic flight across the continental US.  My roles on this project include designing efficient excitation inputs, performing system identification analyses, enabling real-time evaluation of stability margins, supplying backup algorithms for air data estimation, identifying low-order equivalent systems (LOES) modeling for flying qualities analysis, and performing general flight dynamics and control analyses.

Integrated Adaptive Wing Technology Maturation (IAWTM)

The IAWTM is a joint project between NASA and Boeing under the NASA Advanced Air Transport Technology Project (link) to mature modeling and control technologies for "green" aircraft where flutter instability is an issue due to reduced weight and rigidity.  The project culminates in a series of wind tunnel tests with a half-span model in the Transonic Dynamics Tunnel (TDT) at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.  My roles on the project include developing actuator models, evaluating ground vibration test data for finite element model correlation, desigining efficient excitation inputs, performing system identification of aeroelastic models, and designing control laws for active flutter suppression (AFS).

X-56A MUTT

The X-56A (link) was a subscale demonstrator designed by Lockheed Martin to exhibit aeroelastic flutter within the normal flight envelope.  The project goals included maturing modeling, system identification, and feedback control technologies to enable stable flight beyond the open-loop flutter speed, which was demonstrated in flight.  My roles on the project included designing excitation inputs and performing system identification analysis for aeroelastic models that accurately predict the flutter instability.
