University Scholarships for Prospective Undergraduate Students

To apply for these scholarships, apply for admission to a degree granting program at UMD. For maximum consideration, prospective freshman and transfer students must submit all admissions materials by December 1.

Banneker/Key Scholarships

The Banneker/Key Scholarship, awarded to the highest achieving entering freshman from Maryland and across the nation, covers the full cost of tuition, mandatory fees, room and board, and a book allowance for four years. Admission to the University Honors Program and eligibility for Honors housing are additional benefits. Scholarship candidates are identified through evaluation of the admission application materials. Academic achievement, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and an essay are the criteria reviewed. Semifinalists are invited to campus for an interview before final selections are made.

Dean's Scholarship

The Dean's Scholarship provides one or two-year awards of $1,500 to $4,500 to outstanding entering freshman from Maryland. Recipients are identified through evaluation of the admission application materials.

Maryland State Scholarships

The Maryland State Scholarship Administration (MSSA) offers and administers the following scholarships and grants: Educational Assistance Grant, Guaranteed Access Grant, House of Delegates Scholarship, Senatorial Scholarship, and Distinguished Scholarship. They are based on need, merit, or both. For more information, please contact MSSA at 410-974-5370. To be considered for most MSSA aid your FAFSA must be postmarked by March 1 (March 1, 2006 for the 2006-2007 academic year or March 1, 2005 for the 2005-2006 academic year)

National Merit Scholarship

The University is a sponsoring institution of scholars selected by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) as finalists. Four-year scholarships - $2000 per year for Maryland residents, and from $750 to $2000 per year for out of state students based on need - are awarded. Finalists should follow NMSC's instructions for first choice notifications carefully and observe deadlines to remain eligible for awards.

Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP)

The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP). Sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), NREIP is a 10 week summer research opportunity for undergraduate juniors and seniors, and graduate students, under the guidance of a mentor, at a participating Navy Laboratory. The stipend amounts for the program are $5,500 for undergraduate students and $6,500 for graduate students. U.S. citizenship is required; permanent
residents accepted at certain labs. The application is currently open and must be completed by January 12, 2007. References are due by January 19, 2007.

President's Scholarships

The President's Scholarship provides four-year awards to exceptional entering freshman from Maryland and across the nation. Awards range from $2000 to $4,500 per year. Recipients are identified through evaluation of the admission application materials. Academic achievement, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and an essay are the criteria reviewed.

Stay Fit in College Scholarship

This is a $700 scholarship from Stay Fit in College. The only requirement is that you submit a completed application.

Regents Scholarship Program

The Regents Scholars program recognizes the extraordinary academic achievements of the brightest entering freshman from Maryland. This four-year scholarship covers the full cost of in-state tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board, plus a $1000 stipend each academic year. Regents Scholars are automatically admitted to the University Honors Program and are eligible for Honors housing. Award recipients are selected from the most academically talented entering freshman each year.

Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarship

These awards are available to outstanding students transferring from Maryland community colleges. The awards cover in-state tuition and mandatory fees for two years of undergraduate study. To be eligible for consideration, students must have an overall grade point average of 3.5 for all college work attempted and must have completed an Associate of Arts degree or the entire first two years of courses for the major in which the student expects to enroll. Candidate nomination forms are available in late December from the UM Undergraduate Admissions Office or from community college advisers. The deadline for receipt of the application, official transcripts, and scholarships materials is early March. Contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for details.

Weinberg Regents Scholarship

The Board of Regents has designated the Weinberg Regents Scholarship to be awarded to a Maryland community college transfer student in order to continue the commitment to outstanding students. In order to be selected for this award, a student must have exceptional qualifications, including achievement of a 4.0 grade point average, completion of the Associates of Arts degree at a Maryland community college, evidence of creative and intellectual activities or scholarly potential, and have been admitted to one of the University of Maryland System institutions. The deadline for submitting the candidate's application material is June 15. The winner may receive the scholarship for two years, totaling no more than four semesters including summer sessions.

AIAA Scholarships

AIAA offers a range of undergraduate scholarships to college sophomores, juniors, and seniors each year, and recipients can apply to renew their scholarship annually until they graduate. Deadlines are usually in January. Check here for scholarship details and deadlines.

Glamour Tope Ten College Women Scholarship

Glamour magazine offers a $20,000 scholarship to 10 women each year through their Top 10 College Woman Competition.

Lockheed Martin Innovate the Future Contest

Lockheed Martin Corporation has announced a worldwide innovation contest with cash awards totaling $50,000.

The “Innovate the Future” contest creates a global forum for interested participants to share their ideas on how innovation can enable a more secure future for the planet. Participants are invited to submit their thoughts on a range of topics facing the world community, including the need for sustainable energy, cyber security, and healthcare.

To enter the contest, participants must complete a brief submission online by September 30, 2012.

Up to five ideas will be selected for cash awards by a committee comprised of Lockheed Martin employees and at least one independent third party. There will be up to one $25,000 grand prize, one $10,000 second place prize, and three $5,000 third place prizes. The grand prize winner will also receive an incubation contract with the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute at the University of Maryland to help validate and develop the idea.

NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program

The NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizens who are accepted or enrolled in an accredited program, and remain in good academic standing at their respected college or university.

NASA Motivating Students in Science and Technology (MUST)

NASA MUST awards scholarships and internships to undergraduates pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, fields. The MUST Project is open to all students and is particularly focused on engaging students from underserved and underrepresented groups to enter STEM fields.

National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship is a highly competitive, portable fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines. NDSEG confers high honors upon its recipients, and allows them to attend whichever U.S. institution they choose. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance.

This is a great scholarship for seniors who are planning on attending graduate school.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awards Fellowships for graduate study leading to research-based master's and doctoral degrees in the fields of science and engineering relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.

Each Fellowship consists of three years of support usable over a five-year period. For each year of support, NSF provides a stipend of $30,000 to the Fellow and a cost-of-education allowance of $12,000 to the degree-granting institution.

Fellowship awardees must be enrolled in an accredited US university, college, or non-profit academic institution of higher education offering graduate degrees in eligible science and engineering fields by Fall 2013. Confirmation of acceptance in an NSF-approved graduate degree program is required at the time of Fellowship acceptance, by May 1, 2013. Upon acceptance of an NSF GRFP Fellowship, Fellows must certify that they meet all of the eligibility requirements as described in this Program Solicitation.

This is an excellent opportunity for graduating seniors who plan on pursuing a graduate degree.

SAE Engineering Scholarships: Sponsored through the SAE Foundation

SAE Engineering Scholarships are available to eligible high school seniors. SAE International, is a global association of more than 128,000 engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries. Application materials are due by January 15.

SMART Scholarship

Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program. The SMART Scholarship for Service Program is open only to U.S. citizens, and students
must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible.

The Women in Aerospace (WIA) Foundation Scholarship

The Women in Aerospace (WIA) Foundation Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship available to a rising junior or senior working towards a bachelor’s degree in engineering, math or science.
