The Wind Terpines is a team consisting of engineering and business students competing against top universities across the nation in the Department of Energy’s Collegiate Wind Competition. The team’s primary task is to create a working prototype of an off-grid wind turbine.
In addition to building a working prototype, the team also creates a business plan describing how to implement and scale the product. The team conducts market research and analyzes user requirements for the turbine, as well as researching industry best practices to incorporate into their prototype. They present their results to industry panelists during the American Wind Energy Association conference.
In 2017, the team took first place in Technical Design at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Collegiate Wind Competition 2017 Technical Challenge. The UMD team was one of ten teams from around the country selected to take part in the competition that was held that year at the National Wind Technology Center in Boulder, Colo.
