The Whiting-Turner Infrastructure Engineering Laboratories restoration initiative is ushering in a new era for CEE by equipping generations of students with the tools and resources needed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the systems and structures on which society relies.

A Destination for the Engineers of Tomorrow

A new, state-of-the-art design connects all laboratory spaces along a dramatic glass-walled, curved hallway, grouping together structures, materials, soils, asphalt, and sample preparation areas into “dirty” and “clean” lab areas. The redesigned space and top-of-the-line equipment will enable students to:

  • Develop a strong fundamental understanding of the behaviors of  materials employed in infrastructure design
  • Master Quality Assurance testing techniques for infrastructure construction
  • Learn cutting-edge non destructive evaluation approaches for monitoring the structural health of bridges, buildings, and other critical infrastructure assets
  • Apply lessons learned to tackle critical issues ranging from bridge and roadway safety and water resource management to storm and earthquake resilience and transportation systems development

An Opportunity for Enhanced Education

The redesigned laboratories will also become the new home of two key courses—ENCE300: Fundamentals of Engineering Materials and  ENCE444: Experimental Methods in Geotechnical and Structural Engineering—enabling faculty to leverage innovative laboratory testing techniques to complement classroom lectures.
