Adviser: Derek Paley

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree in aerospace engineering?
Long-term interest in the field as well as an interest in problem-solving.

What made you choose UMD for graduate school?
Availability of funding, quality of advisors, and research topic options.

About Jordan
I come from Glen Burnie, just south of Baltimore. In high school I really enjoyed math and music, so I picked one to make a career out of. That choice eventually led me to the University of Maryland Clark School's Aerospace Engineering department. In my junior year of undergraduate study I took a controls course that got me interested in the discipline, and a year later decided I wanted to pursue graduate research on the topic. So now I'm back for at least two more years, and who knows what will be next. I still enjoy music, and spend my time playing when I can, but aerospace has become my career and my life.

Hobbies
Music, TV Shows/Movies, Reading, Video/Board Games, most things Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Why did you choose aerospace engineering as your field of study?
A combination of many factors. It helps that my parents are Trekkies though. We used to dedicatedly watch new episodes of Enterprise every week. Needless to say, science fiction had something to do with it. I also enjoy learning about technology and using it to solve difficult problems, so there are naturally many aspects of the field I find interesting. In particular I enjoy working with computers to solve engineering problems, so I gravitated towards work with guidance, navigation, and control topics.

What are your plans post-graduation?

Work in industry

What else should your fellow grad students know about you?
I like almost any pet animal, but especially dogs. I also enjoy eating junk food, playing/listening to jazz and rock music, and making jokes or just good conversation.

Travis Burch
Hometown: Champaign, IL
Advisor: Derek Paley

Why I would like to work in Aerospace: I have always been a tinkerer and as a kid I loved the mystery behind things that could fly. As I grew up, engineering became the clear winner in terms of fields that most aligned with my interests. I completed my Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering to fulfill the side of me that loves to tinker. The next step for me was to learn to tinker on things that would eventually fly across the country, or across the solar system.

Why I chose UMD: The availability of funding was sure a big bonus. On top of that, I was excited to get to live in a completely different part of the country and have some new experiences.

About me: I grew up in Champaign, IL right next to the University of Illinois and will always love the Fighting Illini. However, upon graduating from high school I chose to get a bit further from home and go to the University of Michigan to get a Bachelor's in mechanical engineering. To change things up even more I decided to spend a summer abroad, studying at TU Berlin during my final few semesters at Michigan. I am always looking for a new adventure and love to get outside of my comfort zone to experience new things, meet new people and see a bit of the world in the process.

Hobbies: Soccer, Backpacking, Scuba Diving, Cooking&Baking, Reading, and trying to learn to play the guitar
Post Graduation Plans: Unsure at this time.
Things others should know about me: I used to be a gymnast!

Mickey T. Da Silva
Hometown Thousand Oaks, CA
Adviser Stuart Laurence

What made you choose UMD for graduate school?
I've wanted to work on space technology since I was a small child and I decided that I would either approach it from the physics side, or an engineering perspective. I applied to graduate programs in both physics and Aerospace engineering and decided that the engineering path was the more practical of the two; I may even be able to somehow combine them. The school was recommended to me (particularly Dr. Stuart Laurence) by a respected friend and colleague. In addition, it's quite close to where I will also be working as an Aerospace Engineer. So it's a win-win from my perspective.

About Mickey
Violinist, runner, physicist/chemist, now apparently an aerospace engineer; I spend the vast majority of my days working or learning with occasional bouts of exercise. I prefer running but biking or swimming aren't bad either. I like flying, long walks, and libraries; museums and gardens are wonderful and I sang in my high school and university choirs

Hobbies
Music (mostly classical), Running, Physics, Dungeons and Dragons

Why did you choose aerospace engineering as your field of study?
I've wanted to work on space technology since I was a small child and I decided that I would either approach it from the physics side, or an engineering perspective. James Sutherland-Foggio
Hometown: Florham Park, NJ
Adviser: Anubhav Datta

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree in aerospace engineering? What made you choose UMD for graduate school?
I discovered my love of aerospace engineering during my undergrad mechanical engineering program. I decided to pursue a degree to become an industry leader in research and design After visiting UMD, I was overwhelmed by both the quality of lab and fabrication facilities as well as the friendliness of the faculty and other grad students

About James
I just graduated from Villanova University in May with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and Math. Born the middle of three boys, I grew up fairly laid back, being a mediator between arguments, and just going with the flow of things. I also grew up loving cats, my parents currently have four. In high school, I played tennis and soccer. Except I quit tennis after freshman year after never winning a game with my doubles partner (every match was 0-6, 0-6). I did play soccer all four years and loved it. I played a little intramural in college, but nothing much. I don’t follow soccer much and really only watch football. Even though I’m from North Jersey and the Jets practice facility is in my hometown, I’m a Philadelphia Eagles fan. I like to listen to classic, alt, and indie rock. My favorite band and first concert was The Black Keys. Feel free to say hi and stop to talk to me when you see me!

Hobbies
Frisbee, Soccer, Scuba diving

Why did you choose aerospace engineering as your field of study?
When I was little, I wanted to be an architect but later realized my artistic abilities never progressed beyond age 7. Applying to colleges, mechanical engineering seemed like the right choice due to its broad range and I’d have a chance to build a mini battle bot. As I continued my studies, I realized my true passion for aerospace. It stemmed from the model rockets and RC planes I flew as a kid, but aerospace also offers fascinating challenges to study. I wanted to further develop and specialize my skills before heading into the industry so I decided to get my graduate degree.

What are your plans post-graduation?
Work in industry

What else should your fellow grad students know about you?
I'm not sure what to say. If you want to know more about me, come ask. I don't bite I promise.

I grew up near Seattle and got my undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at George Fox University. Most of my free time has been spent with my high school's FIRST Robotics team, which I helped start during my junior year of high school. Despite going to college in Oregon, I frequently drove north for the weekend to help with the competitions. I've picked up video editing to stay involved with my team during the rest of the year and have found that I really enjoy that. Besides that, I really enjoy rock climbing and watching the Seahawks play.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree in aerospace engineering?
I've always loved space and recently realized that my love of mechanical structures could pair nicely together. My overly specific long-term goal is to become a structural engineer on the rockets that send astronauts to Mars. While I know that this plan may change, it's helping me go in a good direction until I find something I want more.

What made you choose UMD for graduate school?
Besides the great program and reputation, everyone I've interacted with at UMD has been so helpful and friendly. While the full funding was the main deciding factor for me, I was pleased to find that UMD was my first choice anyway.

Hobbies: Rock climbing, video editing, FIRST Robotics

Why did you choose aerospace engineering as your field of study?
I grew up loving astronomy but didn't really think about aerospace engineering as a career until my junior year of college. I applied for a NASA scholarship and part of the application was writing an essay about what my future application plans were. I made up a story about how I was going to get my master's degree in aerospace engineering and then work for NASA. It turned out to be a pretty convincing essay because it not only won me the scholarship, but it also helped me realize that I had an awesome plan that I should definitely pursue.

What are your plans post-graduation?
Become a structural engineer for NASA

Don't be shy. What else should your fellow grad students know about you?
I've wanted to get a pet rabbit for over a year now. I love playing with fluffy animals, despite being somewhat allergic to them.

WANYI NG
Hometown: Flagstaff, AZ
Faculty adviser: Anubhav Datta

Tell us about yourself.
I grew up in Flagstaff, AZ, the nation’s first Dark Sky City and home of the discovery of Pluto. I attended public school before receiving a scholarship to attend Duke University, where I studied mechanical engineering. Throughout high school and college, I continually trained in ballet and messed around in modern, jazz, and latin as well. I spent my summers attending dance programs, working on a civil engineering project in Brazil, and interning at NASA Goddard. I am working with Professor Anubhav Datta on electric aviation. I am currently dancing part-time with DC Contemporary Dance Theatre and will be a NASA Pathways Intern in the spring of 2017.

Why did you choose aerospace engineering as your field of study?
Growing up with interest in space and physics, I eventually found my way to mechanical engineering as a broad major within which I could explore different applications. A variety of factors led me to focus on aerospace – among them, an internship at NASA with exciting projects and inspiring people, as well as a hope that space industry technology can lead also advancements in renewable energy. What are your plans post-graduation? Working at Goddard and continuing to dance in the DC area

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree in aerospace engineering?
As a mechanical engineering major, I found aerospace to be an interesting field of application. After interning at NASA Goddard, I decided I wanted to gain more knowledge in aerospace engineering and learn from a long-term independent research project.

What made you choose UMD for graduate school?
The UMD aerospace engineering program seems well established and connected in both research and industry, and I received a very good funding package for a masters program. I got along well with the other aerospace graduate students when I visited campus, who all gave positive evaluations of the program.

Don't be shy. What else should your fellow grad students know about you?
My list of favorite places nearby includes Great Falls, the rooftops of DC apartments, and the Silver Spring farmer’s market – I’m looking for places to add to that. I am a proud alumna of Duke, and I tented for basketball tickets, but that doesn’t mean I’m obsessed with beating UMD at basketball. If you have a pet, apologies in advance if I pay more attention to the pet than to you.

LAURA PAQUIN
Hometown: Baltimore, MD
Faculty adviser: Stuart Laurence

Tell us about yourself.
I was born and raised in The City That Reads until I moved to South Bend, IN, to study engineering at the Univ. of Notre Dame. After spending one summer dropping dishes, I terminated my career as a waitress and since then have held internships for GE Aviation and Northrop Grumman in Maryland, Florida, and California. I am excited to have returned to the Crab Cake Capital of the World and to begin my graduate studies.

Why did you choose aerospace engineering as your field of study?
In high school I was deeply interested in two things: physics and track & field. At one point during my 8 seasons of jumping, my AP physics teacher sent me documents outlining the physics of high jump--how my CG would move under the bar as I flew above--and I have since retained a fascination with aerodynamics.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree in aerospace engineering?
I had a significant experience doing undergrad research, loved participating in AIAA conferences, and was encouraged to pursue a PhD by my professors. I have also held 3 internships and generally found myself disenchanted by industry work.

What made you choose UMD for graduate school?
Mostly my adviser. I got to visit him in the fall before beginning grad school apps. He then also facilitated me visiting once more in the spring after I was accepted. Out of all the potential advisers I met during grad school visits, he was the only one who met with each of his advisees individually weekly and showed a genuine interest in their progress as well as that of his students from class. We discussed possible projects for me, and he encouraged me to explore topics that I had not touched in my undergrad research. I was also impressed by the grad students I met. They congregated to answer my questions, gave me their candid advice, and even let me participate in setting up an experiment with them. Finally, the partnership with Tunnel 9 will allow me to obtain data in a world-class facility while pursuing my degree.

Hobbies: Running, skiing, sailing, ultimate frisbee, pulling pranks

What are your plans post-graduation?
Probably to take a nap.

Don't be shy. What else should your fellow grad students know about you?

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Alex, and I am originally from Rochester, NY. I recently graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Daytona Beach with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering, and am now at UMD pursuing a Master’s degree in the same field. I absolutely love outer space, and have every intention of applying to become an astronaut in my future. I have completed three internships with NASA, two of which were at Goddard Space Flight Center right here in Greenbelt from August 2013 to May 2014 where I was with the observational cosmology department, and the third was at Kennedy Space Center over the summer of 2016 where I was working on an ISRU component for the next Mars lander. I’m currently trying to earn my private pilot certificate, and hope to continue that effort in the local area. I’m very excited to be a part of the UMD community and the aerospace engineering department and love learning more about the aerospace field. Go Terps!

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree in aerospace engineering?
Several reasons: 1) I loved my undergraduate program and would like to pursue more in depth knowledge of the subject through 400-700 level courses 2) I've always wanted to undertake an aerospace research project to see a different side to academic study 3) I would like to be more marketable in the industry as an engineer with a graduate degree

What made you choose UMD for graduate school?
Again several reasons: 1) Financial incentive through a university GTA 2) The opportunity to possibly conduct my graduate research at NASA-GSFC where I previously completed two internships 3) Out of the schools I was admitted to, UMD is the closest to home (Rochester, NY). This is a nice bonus after having lived all the way down in Florida for four years. 4) Due to being at GSFC for a while, I'm already familiar with the area, and slightly familiar with the school 5) Dr. Hartzell's research, and all the work done in the UMD AE department, really closely aligns with what I'd like to study.

Hobbies: Flying, freemasonry, baseball, motorsports including NASCAR, waterskiing, music, any outdoor activity, target shooting

Why did you choose aerospace engineering as your field of study?
From a young age I was always a hands on learner by building with anything I could find. As I got older and saw how awesome the shuttle program was, I wanted a way to combine mechanical design/engineering with space, and thus went into aerospace engineering.

What are your plans post-graduation?
