The Evolution and Deployment of Operational UAV Systems

ABSTRACT: A brief look back at the evolution of military UAVs will be presented. Specifics of the engineering effort required to integrate the Pioneer UAV system with the battleship Iowa will be presented. The chronology of the U.S. Army's tactical UAV concept development and integration of the Shadow 200 TUAV system with the force structure and its deployment in Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan will also be presented. The incorporation of lessons learned based upon the use of UAVs in a real combat environment and the resulting enhancements to the system will also be presented.

BIO: Dr. Dominic Palumbo an Aerospace Engineer who, since retiring in 2007, has been lecturing at the University of Maryland in College Park teaching a two-semester aircraft design course. Dr Palumbo received his B.S., M.S., and Ph. D. from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now known as NYU Tandon School of Engineering). His 38 years of engineering experience working for Fairchild Republic Company, Grumman Aerospace Corporation and AAI Corporation encompasses the design and development of a wide range of aerospace systems including ground attack and air superiority fighter aircraft, unmanned reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft (aka drones), advanced weapon systems, space propulsion systems and strategic defense systems. His work in the design, development and integration of UAVs has resulted in numerous operational systems for both the U.S. and, under contract to AAI, several foreign military organizations. Two of the UAVs designed by Dr. Palumbo have been inducted into the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.
