Family members, friends and faculty established the Joseph Guthrie Memorial Scholarship in February 1990 to support merit-based scholarships for full-time students majoring in aerospace engineering. The Scholarship is awarded to the undergraduate in aerospace engineering with the highest overall academic average through the junior year, like 2020 Guthrie Scholarship recipient, Niloy Gupta (pictured at left).

This fund was established in memory of Joseph Guthrie, an alumnus of the University of Maryland and a United States Air Force pilot who died in an airplane accident.
